Humans and dogs do not speak the same language. Adopting a puppy is adopting a baby with whom you will never share language. Puppy class opens opportunities for humans to communicate with their furry companions. The foundational building blocks for a human-dog relationship can be built very strong when using puppy class! This comes from trainers teaching humans about their dog’s body-language, teaching cues that increase the bond between humans and their dogs, and more.” Words from our very own dog trainer Tay. In this blog you will find out why puppy classes are a huge benefit to your furry little one. With the help of Tay, she gave reasons why puppy training is not only beneficial but also necessary.
New Puppy Challenges
When adding a new puppy to the family, there can be huge challenges. Not just for the puppy, but for the family as well. With puppies it takes a lot of work and determination to make sure they develop healthy habits and manners. Not only just that but to make sure they get the proper socialization, so they grow up to not be afraid or become aggressive towards other dogs. Puppies are not born knowing exactly how consent works or boundaries-the same as humans. Tay says, “Puppy class is an amazing resource for teaching puppies just that! They learn how to ask for consent of interaction, how to accept or reject those requests, and how to respect boundaries that are established by others, etc. Just like humans, puppies need to be taught these lessons and learn how to apply them in future situations. This is how you create and maintain a socially savvy dog.”
The Puppy Stage
The puppy stage is the period where their brains absorb information about the world, as stated before they learn about interacting with dogs, other animals, humans, different spaces, and activities that they do for the rest of their lives. One problem to this early on is puppies are often too young to be vaccinated, so proper socialization can be risky! It is important to be selective of where puppies go to ensure they don’t get sick. Puppy classes that take proper care of cleaning facilities and toys while monitoring which puppies come into the facility and what their vaccination status is makes a huge difference in a puppy’s ability to be safe and to learn. Well, socialized puppies are the ones who can play with other dogs, see other animals on leash and remain comfortable. Socialized puppies are more easily inclined to adapt more to life changes as moves, new animals or people in the home, suddenly people wearing masks or other items that feel novel. During this learning period puppies develop their abilities to share with others, using skills from puppy class, humans could help puppies not guard resources and be welcoming of others being around while they have food, toys, chews and more. Puppy class is also a healthy way to have a nice, tired puppy at the end of the day! Romping around with friends will give your pup good enrichment time and a well, satisfied pooch! Tay states, “Puppy classes help humans relate to their dog, their dog relate to dogs, and their dog relate to the world. Lives are truly changed by the simple act of helping a puppy build confidence in social skills, personal skills and relationship building. Puppies who go through puppy class are less likely to need greater intervention in training in the future. Puppy classes take measures to prevent resource guarding, aggression, reactivity. Nothing is a guarantee, but puppy class definitely gives pooches a leg up-pardon the phrase-in multiple ways later in life!”.
Puppy Training Commands
When it comes to training with commands or removing unwanted behaviors, there are two types of training. Negative reinforcement which is taking an action and using punishment as the course of correction for the unwanted behavior. This training method also uses E-collars, shock collars, or prong collars, these types of collars can be painful and can have an impact on your dog. Another type of training method is positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement uses rewards such as treats, toys, and anything that you dog may find rewarding for desired behaviors. This way of training has a much more positive, lasting effect than its counterpart. Of course, at JenLovesPets our training methods use positive reinforcement.
JenLovesPets now offers puppy training! “They’re cute, they’re cuddly, they’re oftentimes more work than we expected. When it comes to puppy training our team will teach your puppy what they need to have the best start in life. This can include potty training, crate training, socialization with other dogs/humans/locations, as well as help with inappropriate mouthiness and other less-than desirable behaviors.” For the JLP fam, this is a great new service for those adding a new addition to the family!
