In preparation for the 4th of July; there’s a lot of excitement around Independence day for humans, but there’s a lot of problems that the excitement can cause for our non-human companions. The noise and flashes of the fireworks can cause serious distress for our pets. Here’s a list of ways that you can make sure they have the best possible time during what can be a very stressful night for them.
Getting ahead of the party will help them immensely!
Before the 4th you can start introducing your furry friend to the strange sounds of the fireworks by playing youtube, spotify, or other listening apps with firework sounds. You can play these sounds on any listening device, when you are practicing with the sounds be sure it is at a volume that your pet can tolerate and preferably ignore. When you play these sounds, be sure that your non-human family members are doing something relaxing and rewarding, such as during mealtimes or working on chewies. If you notice any change in their body language or that the sounds are bothering them then turn down the sound effects and slowly increase it as they show you they are comfortable. This will help desensitize them to the noise.
You can also help get them on a schedule that ensures they are inside when it starts getting dark outside so that it doesn’t upset their routine. If you know your area gets very loud for the holiday, or you know you have a very sensitive friend then you can look at getting some calming assistance such as a Thunder shirt, pheromone diffuser, pheromone collars, CBD, and of course chewies (good chewies include no-hides, himalayan chews, and if you need more recommendations reach out to Jen Loves Pets). If you have an extremely sensitive pet then check in with your vet to see if an anxiety medication or even a sedative is a good option for them. Vets are extremely busy this time of year, so be sure to check in with your veterinarian ASAP! While you’re doing that be sure that your pet’s microchip is up to date with accurate information for you just in case something happens and they do get out.
On the big day:
1. Keep animals inside! More animals get lost on firework holidays than any other time of the year! When it starts getting dark be sure that all your animals are securely inside.
2. Close blinds/curtains, reduce sight of outside scariness!
8. Make sure the area that your baby has is comfortable. Blankets and beds are great, wherever your pet feels safe. Sometimes they will bury themselves underneath, that is totally okay if that’s where they feel safest.
9. MOST IMPORTANT! Stay calm, yourself! Give them calm attention and love, promising them it will be okay and the scary is only temporary!
