This seems to be a fairly universal fact at this point. We have had to navigate an unprecedented time, and so have our furry friends. Covid has resulted in so many families finally having time to be home with an animal, so they adopt one, which is exciting and amazing; what’s not amazing is the fallout that humans, dog walkers, pet sitters and trainers are all starting to see. We’re seeing loads of animals who haven’t had the chance to be socialized with others because humans aren’t able to interact with each other. We’re seeing animals who have never had to be alone since they came into their forever home having a hard time with humans going back to work because their worlds are suddenly turning upside down. This can result in some big behavior problems for the animals and humans.   Separation Anxiety is a big term with loads of baggage associated with it. True separation anxiety has some pretty dramatic side-effects. It will look like a dog who doesn’t quiet down the entire time their humans are away. It will look like a dog damaging their crates and even hurting their body to get to an escape. It will look like a cat destroying furniture and evacuating their bodies while refusing to eat or drink because they’re too stressed without their humans around. These are terrible things to come home to, and truly terrible things for our animals to have to experience.   How do we help? It is important that while you are home and immediately available to your pet, that you start giving them some alone-time training. This may mean closing the door and being in the other room only long enough for your pet to eat at first, slowly building up time. This could mean crate training with fun crate games to help your dog see that the crate is a wonderful place to be, even if they can’t see you. It also looks like teaching your pets to enjoy independent activities like chewing, playing on their own, or licking appropriate substances in appropriate locations (lick mat, Kong, etc.).   We also don’t want to immediately leave our pets for 8 hours one day when they haven’t had to be alone at all until then. Start with shorter bursts, step outside and back in, work your way to a walk around the block, go to the store for 15 minutes, take an hour to get groceries, make sure your pet can handle these steps first. If they are struggling, get a trainer in your home, and look into getting a pet sitter to check in on them during the day.   It’s important that our pets have things to occupy their time whilst we are gone. Even if your pet doesn’t have separation anxiety you want to prevent it, and even prevent something lower like separation distress, discomfort and boredom. This will protect your home as well as your pet’s mental state. Give them safe and fun activities that are appropriate for the amount of time that you are gone. Your leaving should not be a terrible thing for them.

It is important to brush your dogs’ teeth, so they do not get inflammation of the gums or teeth. Keeping your pups “K-9’s “healthy is vital to their health and well-being, not just for avoiding bad breath. Dogs can get tooth decay, have pain or sensitivity in their gums and teeth, infection, decay, and even bone loss. In some extreme cases, heart disease can also come about through bad dental hygiene. Regular brushing can help prevent and reduce the amount of plaque involved. To get your pet comfortable with you touching their teeth, try and get them used to you touching their mouth and examining their teeth by giving them praise and perhaps a reward or a treat. Make sure you are well prepared with your tools of the trade when the time comes, whether that be a special Veterinary Health Council approved dog toothpaste or something you find suitable to get rid of plaque and tartar build-up. Some people are more comfortable using their finger for their pooch’s teeth, although it is more common with smaller breeds and isn’t as sufficient. Letting your dog try a tiny bit of the dog approved toothpaste first might make them more comfortable with the process.  It is always important to remember to never use human toothpaste as many brands contain fluoride which is essentially toxic to your pooch. Once your dog Is more comfortable with you and you are prepared, make sure to get into the most comfortable position for you dog, whether that’s being by their side or in front of them. Make sure to not bend over and appear too large and threatening to them in this time of stress. Once you are in a comfortable position make sure to use the proper amount of toothpaste depending on the size of your dog and lift the upper lip to expose their teeth. After this make sure to brush in small circles and get them as squeaky clean as possible. Make sure you pay attention to their gum line and remember to reward your baby with a treat or one of their favorite toys. Words of encouragement and head scratches couldn’t hurt either. Try to brush Fido’s teeth at least once a week or more and you can also supplement with dental bones or dental treats. It is also important to take care of your frisky feline’s fangs, although that is a much more difficult task to do. It is best to start cleaning your cats’ teeth at a young age so they get more used to it and are more comfortable with the whole process .Teeth are often overlooked with people and animals alike but remember it is vital to our companions’ health and vitality !

My friend brought up that she collects plants and it really piqued my interest. I investigated it more and after some research, I knew this is a hobby I’d thoroughly enjoy. Of course, having 6 pets made having houseplants a bit of a challenge as some plants are toxic to animals. This, of course, is a huge consideration when making plant purchases. As a beginner, it was a tad overwhelming, but now that I have quite the collection (up to about 50 plants as of today) I figured maybe there are some of you out there who aren’t aware of houseplants that can pose a huge risk to your four-legged babies. I want to inform you of those plants that can pose a risk to your pets, mainly cats and dogs. We hope that our future allows us to call California home permanently.  We currently have six fur babies, two dogs and four cats. Canned foods have significantly more moisture than dry or “semi-moist” foods. Canned foods also are lower in carbohydrates and can be especially beneficial for cats with urinary issues, diabetes, and other illnesses, as well as in the prevention and treatment of feline obesity.

To those who have never known the love of a black cat, let me tell you why these majestic creatures are one of the best to own and love.

They may want to walk or jog throughout the total distance of the preserve while other dogs may want to take the shorter trails that emerge from the main path.

It’s time to plan our holiday vacations. Some folks will take their pets with them. Most will need pet care while they’re away. Many prefer to have a family member or neighbor care for their pet but during the holidays it can be bothersome for all involved. There are other options; not all are ideal for every pet so it’s best to plan your pet care around your pet’s normal lifestyle. Cats are independent by nature and can handle being alone for long periods of time with a few exceptions. For example if he’s anxious or destructive then you’ll want to board him in a cat friendly facility. If you have a low-key cat then hiring a pet sitter to visit twice a day to feed, give fresh water, clean the litter box and play with them works quite well. Dogs are more reliant and finding the best option for them can be difficult. Dr. Sprouse with Peñasquitos Pet Clinic tells her clients “If the dog is relatively calm while alone they’ll do well with a pet sitter coming 2-3 times a day. If a dog is used to having someone at home all the time, then a “live in” pet sitter would be a better option. Such dogs might do better being boarded at a facility with around the clock personnel. If the dog has health problems then boarding at a small facility or veterinarian office is the best option.” PQ resident Amy Kapsis has worked with a local pet sitter for over a year; “We’ve found quality pet sitters book up during the holidays, so we call way ahead when we know we’ll be leaving town. After all, Noby our dog is part of our family and worth every ounce of planning!” Whether a pet sitter, veterinarian, or boarding facility make your reservations as soon as possible to ensure your pet will have the care they deserve.
